Be yourself, be anything

We believe that when students have the confidence to truly be themselves and come to school ready to learn, anything can happen.

At Hudson, you’ll benefit from smaller class sizes, engaging teachers, an enriched curriculum, balanced co-curricular programs from JK to Grade 12, and a friendly coed student body that reflects the diversity of Toronto.

As part of the admission process, we encourage you to:

What differentiates Hudson from other schools? What would families find most surprising about life and learning at Hudson? What advice would you give to new students?

Hudson parents Jill and Shirin, together with recent alumnus Mark, share their personal experiences in a round table discussion with our Director of Enrollment.

FAQ

When is a good time to visit the school?

We host in-person Open House events and virtual information sessions in the fall and winter. Personal tours are available starting mid-September, from Tuesday–Thursday. If you would like to visit on a different day or time, please let us know in your inquiry and we will do our best to accommodate your schedule! If you’re unable to visit in person, check out our virtual campus tour.

What grade levels at Hudson have openings?

Our key intake grades are JK (16 seats), Grade 7 (20 seats) and Grade 9 (20–30 seats). We also add a limited number of seats to Grade 1 (4), Grade 6 (8), and Grade 10 (5–10). Placement in other grades is variable depending on enrollment. Please contact us for current availability in your desired grade.

When should I apply?

We recommend submitting your application as early as possible in the season (October/November for entry the following September), especially for classes with limited placement. If Hudson is your first choice, we recommend applying by the priority deadline. If you would like to receive a decision alongside many other schools in the GTA, complete your application by the general deadline in January. Applications received after the general deadline are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

What happens if there isn’t any space in my desired grade?

We will invite you to submit an application for the wait pool and let you know if a seat becomes available. No application fee is required until placement is confirmed. Returning families are asked to notify Hudson if they intend to return by February 1 each year, and to submit deposits by March 1. If any seats do open up during this period, we will contact applicants in the wait pool to continue with the next steps in the admission process. Priority factors for wait pool applicants include sibling status and gender balance in the current cohort.

How does the assessment and/or interview work?

We review applications once every checklist item in the admission portal is completed. Students meeting our general admission requirements are then invited to the complete the next steps:

Junior Kindergarten applicants join us for a small-group activity session in mid-November. This lasts about an hour, during which they complete a basic academic skills assessment with our teachers.

Applicants to SK–Grade 3 join us for a full-day school visit, during which students complete a language and math assessment with the classroom teacher.

Applicants to Grades 4–8 complete an online math and language assessment, and are then invited for a full-day school visit. The assessment usually takes 60–90 minutes to complete and includes questions from a standardized test, a reading comprehension exercise and some creative writing on a set topic.

Grade 9 applicants complete an online math and language assessment, and are then invited for an interview with our Director of Enrollment and Head of Guidance. The assessment usually takes 60–90 minutes to complete and includes questions from a standardized test, a reading comprehension exercise and some creative writing on set topics. The interview is an informal conversation and opportunity for us to learn more about the student’s academic interests, hobbies, and personal goals.

Applicants to Grade 10 and above are invited for an interview with the Director of Enrollment and Head of Guidance. The interview is an informal conversation and opportunity for us to learn more about the student’s academic interests, hobbies, and personal goals. We also encourage applicants to come prepared with questions of their own. Additional math and language assessments may be required on a case-by-case basis.

When will I find out if I’ve been accepted?

If your application is complete by the priority admission deadline, you will receive a decision before the winter break. If you have applied for the general deadline, you will receive a decision by the common decision date (usually the last week of February). Please let us know if you require an earlier admission decision and we’ll do our best to accommodate where possible. Rolling applications submitted after the general deadline will receive a decision within two weeks of the student’s visit day or interview.

Does Hudson support different learning needs?

Hudson offers a number of “universal accommodations” that are considered a regular part of teaching techniques for all students and often benefit neurodiverse learners. Depending on the grade level and subject area, these may include high structure, computer options, graphic organizers, organizational coaching, mind maps, hands-on materials, and prompts to return attention to tasks. We also implement Individualized Education Plans as needed to provide accommodations like time-management aids, more frequent breaks, colour cues, strategic seating, use of headphones, and extended time limits for assessments. It is important to note that we do not modify the curriculum and cannot offer certain accommodations, including withdrawal assistance, scribing, and modified/alternative assessments. With most classes ranging from 16–22 students with 1 teacher, students requiring ongoing withdrawal assistance or behavioural support may be better served by an educational setting with smaller class sizes and dedicated resource teachers.

Is there a bus service?

Unfortunately, we don't have a bus service. We do connect families interested in carpooling each year, and TTC buddies for students taking public transit. The Line 2 subway connects easily with the Dufferin bus (29), which stops just outside Hudson, and the St Clair West streetcar (512) is also a convenient connection.
